Love can be tender, love can be rough. Love can be joyous, love can be torturous. Clinton Kane has a good grip on the rollercoaster ride that comes with romance, and his music never backs down from wringing every drop of emotion from its lyrics. That means expert use of dynamics. The 21-year-old Aussie native with the Filipino/Norwegian heritage, Brunei/UK upbringing, and Perth education knows how to calibrate bravado - his falsetto whispers often have as much power as his clarion wails. Though he had little interest in becoming a singer-songwriter, this devoted nomad (who mostly listened to Christian music as a kid) became a singer-songwriter with the power of engaging others by sharing his own personal feelings. His YouTube game jumped big-time when he moved from putting covers on his channel to sharing his first original, 2019’s “This Is What Anxiety Feels Like.” Fan reaction to the song nudged him from Australia to Los Angeles and a hook-up with Columbia Records. The pros refined an already fairly-sharp approach, and Kane connected with Martin Garrix for last year’s “Drown.” Melancholy is something that Kane has shown true mastery at, and 2020 also saw him stay on brand with the forlorn valentine “i don’t want to watch the world end with someone else,” as well as the woeful one-two punch, “hopeless” and “forget about us.” This year, Kane honed his hooks. “Chicken Tendies,” written for his mom rather than a fleeting girlfriend, is one of his biggest tracks so far, and “I Guess I’m in Love” is an irresistible piano ballad with concluding crescendo that Adele herself might be envious of. He performed the latter tune and “Go To Hell” for DSCVR Artists To Watch 2022, and the goosebumps in the room during the shoot were plentiful.
