JAWNY - Can Ya. An exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2022, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music.
Hear “Honeypie” once and you want to hear it a second time. Hear it a second time and you want to hear it a third. After that, Jawny’s 2020 alt bop is gonna be on a mental loop that you probably won’t want to break. “Honeypie,” which robs a bit of Michael Jackson while genuflecting to the Isley Brothers, is an earworm. It proves that if sizable hooks are in place, indie funsters like Jacob Lee-Nicholas Sullenger can bend their messages a million different ways. Driven by “an anything-goes” imagination, Jawny’s music contains vérité snippets of conversation that range from pleading with lovers to chastising managers to repeating self-help mantras. They’re sandwiched between catchy lo-fi rawk tunes, often exuberant about their own exuberance, and always damn catchy regardless of how beautifully crazed they sound. The LA-based singer has a way with the plaintive side of things, too. “Colors” and “When I Fall Apart,” from his ‘For Abbey’ EP, are heart-on-sleeve missives. Jawny’s seemingly rando approach grabs anyone who likes their pop outside the mainstream and brimming with idiosyncrasies. Short history: The Bay Area dude grew up with a “cool dad and cool mom” playing music around the house; he started producing beats in high school before moving to Philly to make music as Johnny Utah, a name taken from the famed ‘Point Break’ character; in 2019 “Honeypie” arrived and Spotify gave it a big ride; last year he dropped the ‘For Abby’ EP, proving the “Honeypie” wasn’t a fluke; this year ‘The Story of Hugo’ solidified his post-Beck vision of whimsy working hand in hand with craft. That makes Jawny a must-see young gent, and our DSCVR Artists To Watch 2022 performances await your eyes.
