Scribz Riley - Introduce Myself. An exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2021, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music.
A pick rolls over five radiant guitar strings, and a voice introduces itself, “Ahmm from the Eastsiiiide, Eastsiiiiide of London, we used to beatbox, now we sing anthems…” It’s a song about advancement, about learning, growing and sharing. At its heart, “East Side” is a synopsis of Scribz Riley’s career trajectory. The 27-year-old has been earning kudos for that track, “Mandy” and “Impress Me,” three R&B nuggets from his ‘Wish Me Luck’ debut. Fans had been waiting for the album for a minute, and in a couple of ways, Scribz had been waiting for it, too. An accomplished producer with studio credits that include heavyweights such as Khalid, H.E.R. and Cardi B, he has two Grammys to his name. But the songwriting, beat-making and studio craft that’s marked his past five years of furthering others is now being focused on his own music. ‘Wish Me Luck’ is Scribz coming out from behind the curtain, and its sensuous R&B arrives with a chill atmosphere that blankets you with soul. How did he get here? He played piano in church as a kid, tried a bit of rhyming with London’s storied Mucky Wolfpack, turned to learning FruityLoops when beats were in low supply, found he had valuable POV when it came to crafting tracks, flexed his nascent studio muscles with the Rascals, Wiley and Tove Lo, hit LA and became low-key famous, and looked in the mirror to decide his next challenge should be making his own album. From 6LACK to Headie One, ‘Wish Me Luck’ boasts cool features, but basically it’s a portrait of Scribz being Scribz. You’ll feel like you know him when you’re done checking his ATW performances of “Mandy” and “East Side.”
