Pa Salieu - Block Boy. An exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2021, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music.
“There’s stories to be told,” says Pa Salieu about his musical philosophy. That notion, to have listeners absorb the world around them through sound and narrative, is what separates the best grime rappers from the competition. It only takes a few listens to know the 22-year-old has those goods. His tracks are often characterized by samples of cityscapes - from menacing gunshots and screeching tires to the mundane chatter of a family gathering. Lyrically, he’s always reppin’ his community - “My name is Pa, I’m from Hillset” he raps on “Block Boy.” Combined, these elements give his work a cinematic feel; listeners are viscerally whisked into his life thanks to the first-person perspective. Pa Salieu is his real name, by the way, and he’s proud of its uniqueness. Raised in Coventry, a small city north of London, he was first inspired by his auntie, a folk singer. As a teen, he tried freestyling in a mate’s studio. When his best friend died in 2018, he began taking music more seriously. His fledgling success almost ended when he was shot in the head in October 2019. Months later, after a full recovery, his hypnotic track “Frontline,” which he’d been sitting on for two years, exploded. Because of his look and Gambian heritage, Pa has drawn comparisons to J Hus, but he prefers to stay in his own lane and has told interviewers that he works in no particular genre. Hop into the passenger seat and take a trip with Artists To Watch through two songs from his freshly released 'Send Them To Coventry' mixtape - “Block Boy” and “Betty.” All gas, no brakes.
